Kapa Haka

I walked through the school gates ready to perform at my best. I carried my dress to the hall bathrooms and got changed. I ran to Koka Barb to get my moko stamped on my face. With pressure I pushed forward so I could get as much ink as possible onto my chin. A yellow feather got placed in my hair.

We were at alert level 2 so no parents could come and watch. Matua Canaan yelled "camera are rolling." A wave of excitement gushed through my body. The kaia yelled the first command and we sung as confidently and loud as we could.

I was really proud of my rupu because we learnt three new songs and covid hit so we didn't have much time to practice. My favourite song was definitely Kapana because the girls got to be strong for once. All the boys supported the girls with the singing.

Overall I feel that we were relaxed, confident and loud. It was so fun dressing up and performing. I think we did an amazing job and performed at our best. I can't wait to see the video.

Green Team

Reduce,Reuse, Recycle. We were at Ilminster intermediate watching the Green Team perform. We were sitting in the bleachers with our excitement levels through the roof. Nanny Kora told are twisting and turning story. She put her moko to bed. Begging on their hands and knees she told a story about how she save the aliens.

The kids walked out with skateboards and bikes. But soon after they left, the aliens came. They turned the skate bowl into a rubbish dump. Putting some kind of electric field on the rubbish no one could pick it up.

The kids came back excited to try their new tricks but that didn't happen because all the rubbish had already been dumped. They tried to touch it but it electrocuted them. They ran to Nanny Kora to tell her about the mishap, so Nanny Kora helped.

Overall this play was funny and had a great storyline. I enjoyed all of the singing and dancing. I didn't get bored once. I think they put a lot of work into the play. No one looked scared to perform. The Green Team did a great job.

Speech Finals

A rush of excitement went through my body.  All of the speech finalists got to sit on chairs. I was a little bit discouraged because everyone's speeches were impeccable. Y6 finalists were Finn, Rio, Ella, and me.  I stumble on one of my words but that's ok.

I memorised my whole speech. Everyone had finished their speeches, so now was time to see who won. Y4 winner... Izzy. Y5 winner...  Bridie. Last but not least Y6 winner... Charlotte. I have done it. I WON. When I got home I could not stop thinking about it.

BEDMAS

In my maths workshop I have been learning about BEDMAS. BEDMAS stands for Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction. I found it tricky at first but it got easier the more I practiced. You have to work it out in the order of the bedmas. This means check if their are any brackets then exponents and so on. Here is an example.

Following Gold

Before lockdown all the way till now we have been learning about the Gold Rush. We had to take notes from the story and figure out what the words meant, how it related to you and comparing information within the text. Here are my slides.

SHHH - don't tell

In our writing workshop we played a game where we had sprint of to the kitchen and find an item but you couldn't show anybody. We all got paired up with a buddie. My buddie was Te Atawhai and she gave me fish sauce. You should have seen her face when she tasted it. Here is my'n try and guess in the comments.

Cooking

As you know we have been in lockdown for 1 week now. I love doing maths and the only maths I get to do is over a google meet so I decided to put my measuring skills to the test. I have backed Anzac biscuits, banana choc chip muffins and caramel slice.

I had never baked banana muffins so they were delicious for the first three days but then the icing just went all soggy after that.  My anzac biscuits turned out great but they only lasted two days because my sister ate them all. The caramel slice changed my life. It is rich and silky and falls to pieces in your mouth.

I probably won't be able to bake anymore so I might start cooking dinners like pizza. I am eyeing out vanilla cupcakes because they're easy to make and my mum can't resist.  The caramel slice came in handy today because my grandparents came out for brunch. Overall I have had a scrumptious lockdown.

Lockdown 2.0

Delta had arrived. Getting a head start on us we went into level four lockdown. Auckland had a few cases then spread them to Wellington.  Here's how it's going.

                                                                             Day 1:

I woke up excited and ready to go on google meet. I did a stretch then did a small core workout. Google meet went well. A few questions got answered and we were off to do school work. I made a report on Mangaone farmand another of Alphabet of my Bubble.

                                                                            Day 2:

I carried on with doing a stretch then workout. The workout I did today was for my arms and legs. I jumped onto the couch and started working on steps web. I decided to make banana chocolate chip cupcakes. I iced with vanilla icing and sprinkles. I smashed through all my work because I didn't have everybody screaming in your ears.

I hope that lockdown keeps going as smoothly as it has been.

Story about Cooties ( Made up Germ)

This is my story that I wrote about Cooties. Cooties are a made up type of germ. My goal for this story was to try and be more creative and use descriptive language.  I hope you enjoy.

Have you ever had a group of kids in your class that tell you that you have Cooties? I am apart of that group. Well today started off when Bob and I gave Rebecca Ritz a diagnosis for Cooties. She told us "You bunch of fools Cooties are extinct." We snapped "NO THERE NOT otherwise how did you get that diagnosis." I firmly told her not to touch anyone otherwise they will be at risk to get Cooties.

Rebecca Ritz being her weird self licked her hand and slapped it right onto Bob's face. "AHHH" cried Bob. I wasn't taking any chances to get the disease so I sprinted off the deck and ran up to the playground. R R was right on my tail but I new she wasn't going to catch me because I'm Usain Bolt, Cheetah girl and she's just a dandy lion waving in the wind but not moving.

BOOM, CRASH, SMASH I tripped over a piece of bark and went plummeting into the ground. She caught up and was almost about to catch me but then I herd. "you two go to my class I'll meet you there." Of course it was Mrs McDiarmid. When she made it to the class she told me that cooties went extinct in 1994 and that I have to apologize. Rebecca and I forgave each other.

Questions about Michaela Deprince book

Here are some questions about my opinion of the book. This book is about how Michela was in an orphanage to then become a famous ballerina. SPOILER ALERT: Her dad died in a mining accident and her mum died because she got a disease. I recommend this book.

Why did you choose this book? I picked this book because it is my passion to do ballet and it opened my eyes to how hard people childhoods had been.

If you were the character what would you have different in the story? I would have tried not to step in the toilet.

Where is the book set? It is set in Sierra Leone.

If the book was a tv show what actors would you cast in it? I would cast Laura Linney, Donna Murphy and Paul Giamatti as orphanage nannies, Dwayne Johnson as adoptive dad and Scarlett Johnson as adoptive mum.

Would we be friends? I don't think we would be friends because she is much older than me but I would invite her over to teach me some new ballet steps.

What does the place look like in your head, would you visit there? It looks in head that it would bright and sunny place, I have a strong feeling that everything would be destroyed. I wouldn't visit because I wouldn't feel safe.

Why do you think the author wrote this book? I think she wanted people to know that times can be tough but something will bright we concur that tough time.

What new facts did you learn? I learnt that she had a big struggle start off with an extremely tough life but pushed trough and become a very successful ballerina.

I hope you enjoyed reading my questions and learning new things.

Matariki Poem

This is my poem that I created to share to the class about Matariki. I tried to make it rhyme. I hope you enjoy.

The stars in the night are a wonderful sight.

Look hard and you can see

9 stars shining as bright as can be.

They’re pretty and they shine, but when you see the sun, they'll disappear into thin air.

There is a group you’ll call a troupe.

They are the stars of Matariki.

I say you can look and look,

until daytime takes them away.

Look up in the sky, what do you see?

see the 9 sisters of Matariki.

Their appearance in the sky means the days are getting longer.

The sun is coming back and the frost is getting stronger.

All clustered close, and you may not hear, matariki sing

of the sun and the Maori new year.

Living peacefully in silence.

Remembering the ones we have lost.

We celebrate this time of the year with our loved ones.

Rugby Tournament

Kakahi Orcas take the pitch. Our plan was that I score as many tries possible because girls get two points.  I managed to score seven tries and take our team to the finals. Roll out the carpet roll out the mats come on yellow knock them flat, here us shout here us roar where the house you can't ignore, KAKAHI.

Overall we got 31 points. Karoro Gulls were our competitors in the finals. Cory  sprinted down the field and bam our first try was scored. Momo started running and dodging through the madness and I was the last one to get him, everyone was shouting at me dive on him, get the tag, but unfortunately I wasn't fast enough.

Sheep in a Paddock

In level  three maths strand we played a game called sheep in a paddock. The rules are, if you look out a window you can only see nine sheep, and it has to equal 25 overall. The main rule is you have to have one in each square. Here is an example.

Fast 5 Tournment

Everybody get into position. I ran on the court and shot a 2 pointer. The fast five netball tournament is where only 5 people are allowed on the caught at once.  Zoe and I were shooting like crazy. 2s and 1s were in the hoop like crazy.

Kaiti were our first challengers. Kaiti had good sportsmanship and were really fun to play. The second game was a NIGHTMARE!!! I was in defence and the girl shot for the goal, it fell out and got me on my fingertips so now I have a sprained finger. Then in the second half I went for the ball and ran into someone. I took off  their shoe and scraped up my hands.

The day was all worth it for a donut at the end.

Art

Watching a video of Sandra Silberzweig. She is a famous artist for creative art. I tried my best but I didn't have time for any little detail. Room 1 did abstract Picasso. Koka Katie and Koka Kathleine were so nice, because they let us be free with our art.

The chin of my art makes my whole face look extremely fat. I did about 10 tries and only got 1 right. In my opinion block colours make your art pop more which I like better. I spent a lot of time getting the face shape right so the colours don't work well together.

Gymnastics Festival

Warming up where all the A grade competitors were, Aria, Lola, Alivia, Charlotte and I all practiced vault so we knew what it felt like.  At floor it was like Mangapapa vs Wainui everybody was trying to outskill each other.  Aria did her double flick flack (back handspring).

It was finally our time to SHINE! Vault was the first event, we all made it over.  Beam was so fun it was my highlight of the day.  Floor was weird because my music kept going but everybody started clapping so I couldn't hear it.

Rhythmic was an up beat crazy time.  Mangapapa went first, as soon as we saw how good they were we had to change up the double flick flack to a triple.  The top two teams get a call back. We were one of them. I will remember this day for a long time!

Learning through play

This year for learning through play, the options are P.E, Fabric creations, and Flax. I played at P.E so I have to stay there for 2 days. I played soccer with all boys. They pass the ball to me because they know I will pass back.

Running with the ball passing through the defenders and scoring the goal. The boys were calling me GOAT (Greatest of all time).  Oscar came up to me a said that he thinks i'm a pro. Alice was playing with the frisbys. Koka Leah was playing with Alice and Nathan.

Fabric creations is fun because Koka Nolian comes in and knits with me. She used to sell jackets and they were her own pattern. She showed me her book of old designs. Learning through play has been a fun time to get to know people better.

A grade Gymnastics and Rythmical

Flying over the vault creating a gust of wind behind me. I stuck the landing. 5 girls are in A grade. While we were waiting for Koka Ngaire, we tried to do aerials. (NO handed Cartwheel). We are making up a routine for floor my music is Confident by Demi lovato.

Alivia and Lola both got their front handspring. We learned the beam routine. Their are jumps and leg holds. For the end of the routine, my dismount is a Round off.

For Rhythmical we are going  to be doing backflips. Lola is the ringleader, I think she will be amazing. Creating a Rhythmical routine would be hard, but with a group of year 6 girls is amazing so Jacks is a cool teacher. Gymnastics and rhythmic has been so fun.

Kawa of care

Kawa of care is a topic that MLH has been learning about. Kawa of care is about staying cybersmart on your device and putting it away properly. Alice and I created this poster to show how to stay safe online. I hope you follow these steps so you know how to stay safe.

Easter

Springing out of bed and running into my parents room. My dog comes running in and snuggles under the covers. I made a treasure hunt clue for my brother & sister, the prize is two massive easter eggs. They found most of the clues fast but one of them was super hard for them to find.

I got a easter bunny, 15 medium size eggs, and one big easter egg. I didn't eat any because I wanted to save them for a couple of days. I gave my mum some of my easter eggs because I didn't get her any. The waves were pumping. The swell was clean and big.

After Surfing, I got feijoas off our tree; I collected the reusable bags full of feijoas. I was running round with a chocolate in my hand because I was playing soccer. Overall Easter was an amazing time to spend with my family.

Camp Kaitawa

I think Camp Kaitawa is an amazing place to visit. A cute little lake to kayak in and places to have a bombfire. A basketball court you can draw on or play gutter board. Overall Camp was a blast and I think that you should go for a family holiday there.

Cooks Cove

Grumbling and groaning walking up the steps of the first steep hill. It was a Thursday morning. YELLING out get to the left get to the left hurt my ears. Walking up in a single file line. Cooks Cove has the most beautiful view of Tolga Bay once you get to the top of the first hill. This was a baby walk compared to camp so I don't know if I will survive! Koka Ngaire and Koka Rosie walked up the hill with a few other parents.

We went by car to the walk. I had done the walk once but I ran up it. There is a big rock that is called the Hole in the Wall. We got to take pictures with a picture frame that was built in the ground. I had an amazing time walking up and down Cooks Cove.

I absolutely hated the stairs because they were all different sizes. At the end of the walk I was super thirsty because I finished my water coming back over the hill. I would much rather be getting lifted over the hill. With the overall experience I will do the walk again.

I just wanted to be lying in my bed with a pool of water thrown over me. My feet were boiling hot, I had to take my shoes off. My feet looked like big fat red tomato's. If I did something differently I would definitely not tie my shoes as tight. I could get a bit fitter next time so I could walk a bit faster.

Amazing year ahead

Hugging, screaming laughing. Getting back into school was so fun. Walking up maungaroa was super duper HOT. Klara was my buddy, we were the fastest walkers. Chugging down two bottles of water. The view was impeccable. We had brain break at the top of the hill. Running back down was the funniest thing because everybody was screaming, all the teachers were telling us not to run.

Year 6 surfing was CRAZY. There is 4 groups beginner, novice, intermediate and confident. In the group with me is Rori, Neko and Oska. I caught one wave. I got a few tips from steffan, Matua Nic stayed on the beach.

Walking our school pepeha was so fun. We walked to Hamantua and had a picnic. Everybody had a big talk about what happened in the past of hamanutua Millie, Te Atawhai and I all made a surfboard out of sand to practice our pop ups. Screaming and yelling catching right and left hander waves.

This year has been a BLAST so far.
